Our program uses a multidisciplinary approach that includes our surgeons and anesthesia staff, as well as your primary care provider. The program ensures your care team is well-informed about your specific needs.

Our liaison also accompanies one of your family members to visit you in the recovery room.

Jeffery Wiley, MDExpert surgeons** perform at The Orthopaedic Institute more than 2,500 orthopaedic surgeries each year.

Total Joint Replacement Surgery

More than 1,000 total joint replacements are performed each year at The Orthopaedic Institute. Total knee and total hip replacement  surgery is performed by specialized, dedicated teams in our operating suite. Patients benefit from the latest in equipment and computer-assisted technology. Since 2008, surgeons at The Orthopaedic Institute have been performing the anterior, muscle sparing approach to hip replacement in addition to more traditional approaches. A specialized operating room table and x-ray guidance enables surgeons to access the hip from the front, instead of the side or back, allowing for more precise placement of implants without the need to cut muscle. Patients at The Orthopaedic Institute having an anterior hip replacement typically experience:

  • Shorter lengths of stay;
  • Less need for physical therapy;
  • Fewer restrictions on movement and activities post surgery;
  • Lower risk of dislocating the new joint;
  • Shorter recovery times and quicker return to daily routines.

Spine Surgery

The Orthopaedic Institute specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of spine disorders. Treatment may involve nonsurgical option such as physical therapy, medications, braces, injections and education. Many surgical options are available including minimally invasive approaches, all performed by specially trained teams in the operating room.

Outpatient Orthopaedic Surgery

Patients needing orthopaedic procedures on an outpatient (ambulatory) basis have several options to choose from including:

  • Concord Hospital Day Surgery Center;
  • Capital Orthopaedic Surgery Center, a joint venture with Concord Hospital;
  • Concord Ambulatory Surgery Center, a joint venture with Concord Hospital.

Care Management

Allen Foster, RN, BSOur care management team strives to ensure your transition home is smooth and manageable by completing a comprehensive assessment and interview with you and/or your family, identifying potential barriers to a safe home discharge and obtaining your plans for discharge. Social workers and registered nurse care managers work with your physician, nurses and rehabilitation therapists to develop a plan for your discharge that maximizes your recovery. Your discharge plan may include returning home with the support of visiting nurse services or a rehabilitation stay. Nurse care managers also assist in obtaining needed durable medical equipment to aide in maximizing your functional, mobility and safety.

Kim Nadeau, PT, MS, GCS, CWSFrom elite athletes to injured workers to seniors, our rehabilitation services team maximizes your ability to get back on the move. Our therapists conduct assessments and evaluations to identify treatment goals; provide therapy; work with our Care Management team and home care agencies to set-up rehabilitation services after you leave the Hospital and provide suggestions on how to make your home safe after surgery.

Our therapists’ role with orthopaedic patients include:

  • Conducting a thorough assessment and evaluation to identify treatment goals;
  • Helping achieve the ability to function at one's highest potential and adapt to physical limitations caused by injury, disease or surgery;
  • Working with care coordinators and home care agencies to set-up nurse and rehab services visits, if rehabilitation services are needed after leaving the Hospital;
  • Performing a pre-surgery assessment of the home environment (for patients undergoing certain procedures) to provide suggestions on how to make the home as safe as possible following surgery;
  • Talking with families about the important role they play in the recovery process;
  • Utilizing the latest evidence to design effective therapy plans of care focusing on optimal outcomes.
