FALL 2018 27 WhenConcordHospitalsurgeonDr.Donald McIvorretiredin1956,heestablishedatrust thatwouldsupporthisfamilyafterhisdeath. Morethan60yearslater,theHospitalwas shockedtolearnitalsowasincludedinthe doctor’sestateplanning,withthesecond largestlegacygiftit’severreceived. “Wedidn’tknowthistrustexistedandthat wewerethebeneficiary,”saidPamelaPuleo, ConcordHospital’sChiefAdvancementOfficer. “Itwasacompletesurprisetous.” Inthetrustheestablishedforhiswife,Violet, andtheirthreechildren,Dr.McIvorspecified thatonthedeathofthefinalbeneficiary,the balanceofthetrustbedistributedtoConcord Hospital.Inthesummerof2017,afterthe McIvors’lastsurvivingchildpassedaway,the trust,valuedat$1.3million,wasturnedover totheHospital. “That’shuge.It’sthesecondlargestlegacy giftthatIamawareofforthisorganization,” saidPuleo. TheBoardalsohastheoptionofauthorizing thatmorebespentiftheneedarisesin thefuturetosupporttheHospital’s overalloperation. Dr.McIvorwasamemberofthemedicalstaff atConcord’sMargaretPillsburyHospitalinthe early1900s,servingasmedicalstaffpresident andsurgicalchiefthere.WhenPillsbury andMemorialHospitalforWomenand InfantscombinedtoformConcordHospital, hebecamememberofConcordHospital’s medicalstaffinthe1940sand50s.Dr.McIvor wassohighlyrespectedthatthestudent nurses’yearbookwasdedicatedtohimwhen heretiredin1956,after37yearsofservice. Mrs.McIvoralsosupportedtheHospital.She wasaleadingfundraisingvolunteerinthe capitalcampaigntobuildanewConcord Hospitalbuildingfortheconsolidated PillsburyandMemorialHospitalsatthe currentsiteonPleasantStreet. WhenDr.McIvordied,hisformercolleagues establishedaMcIvorEndowmenttobe usedforHospitaltechnologyandsurgery. Theywantedhimtoberememberedforhis long-timeserviceandleadershipatConcord Hospitalanditspredecessors. Withthesurprisegift,hislegacywillhelp improvehealthcareforthecommunitylong intothefuture. “WearehumbledbyDr.McIvor’scommitment tohealthcareforthiscommunity,”Puleo said.“That’swhatthislegacygiftmeans; hewasconnectedthroughhisworktothe importanceoftheworkoftheHospital.”
