Thegroup,includingyoungcoupleswith theirkids,arepartofthe‘fit4acauseoutdoor bootcamp’,startedthreeyearsagobycancer survivorandConcordHospitalMedicalGroup InternalMedicinenursepractitioner ReneePlodzik. Renee,acertifiedfitnessinstructor,started theworkoutstohelpstayfitherself,andto benefitservicesandprogramsforcancer survivorswhooftenareleftwithmany questionsaftertreatmentends. “Thereisalotofsupportthroughtreatment, thenyouhearthereisnoevidenceofdisease andallofthatsupportdropsoff,”Reneesaid. “It’sreallypost-treatmentthatpatientsI seeintheclinicarestrugglingwith,both physicallyandemotionally.Theywonder ‘what’snext’andhavethatfearthattheir cancerwillrecur.” WorkingOutforCancerSurvivors RENEE PLODZIK WAS INSPIRED TO GET FIT FOR A CAUSE Thebootcampworkoutsarenotgeared towardcancersurvivors,butthededicated groupthatshowsupsupportssurvivorship programsbydonatingtoattend.Thefirst year,thegroupraisedabout$1,000.Lastyear thatincreasedtoapproximately$1,600. Thefundssupporteverythingfromstrength andconditioningprogramsandcounselingto nutritionalservicesandbrafittingsforbreast cancersurvivors. Bootcampworkoutsareopentoanyone, atanyfitnesslevel. “WhatIlikeaboutitisthatpeopledon’tneed daycare,”Reneesaid.“Kidscome.Kidsrun around,theyplaysoccer,theycansometimes gowiththeirparentstothedifferentstations. Abunchofmoms,dadsandkidscomeevery singleweek.” Thefitnessandconditioningprograms thedonationssupport,andthebootcamp workoutsthemselvesareimportantinthe fightagainstcancer. “TheAmericanCancerSocietysays participatinginatleast150minutesof exerciseaweekaftertreatmentcanprevent thatcancerfromreoccurringandpreventnew cancersfromstarting,”Reneesaid.“It’syour bestbetinpreventingcancerfromrecurring.” InadditiontoherjobasanInternalMedicine nursepractitioner,Reneerecentlywas namedtoanewlycreatedpositionasnurse practitionerforConcordHospitalPayson CenterforCancerCare’sSurvivorshipProgram.
