Withmorethan$100,000infinancialsupport fromConcordHospitalTrustgenerousdonors, theCenterforUrologicCarebecamethefirstin NewHampshiretobeginusingthepotentially life-savingprocedure,calledfusionbiopsy.The acquisitionwasamajorachievement,because thefusionbiopsytechnologymoreaccurately diagnosesprostatecanceratanearlystage, savinglivesandpreventingpatientsfrom undergoingunnecessaryprostatebiopsies. Dr.WilliamSantishadbeenmonitoringJoe’s low-riskprostatecancer.In2017,Joe’sPSA, orProstate-specificantigen,levelsincreased, apotentialindicatorofmoreseriouscancer. Previoustraditionalbiopsiesfoundnotumors, butthehigherPSApromptedanMRI.The imagesshowedJoe’stumorwasintheanterior, orfrontsection,ofhisprostate,whereitcould onlybedetectedwiththeenhancedimages providedbytheMRI. Dr.Santisconfirmedthetumorwascancerous byperformingafusionbiopsy,whichcombines stillMRIandmovingultrasoundimagesto provideavivid‘live’viewofpotentialtumors, enablingdoctorstopreciselytargetbiopsiesand increasingtherateoffindingsignificantcancers by30percent. “Thefusionbiopsywasabletotargetthis anteriorlocationtoidentifyatumorwhichwas ofhigherrisk,”hesaid. Eachyear,theCenterforUrologicCareconducts anaverageof300prostatebiopsies,often basedonrisingPSAlevels,whicharen’talways causedbycancer.In2016,beforefusion biopsieswereavailable,lessthanhalfofthe biopsiesdiscoveredprostatecancerthroughthe traditionalmethodofobtainingsamplesfrom differentregionsoftheprostatewithnospecific targets.Urologistsrecognizethatthetraditional methodexposestoomanymentoneedless biopsiesandoftenmissessmallcancers. Theimagesthatguidefusionbiopsyhelprule outsomecasesofsuspectedcancer,and moreaccuratelypinpointtumorstoconfirm thedisease. AfterJoe’sfusionbiopsy,Dr.SantisremovedJoe’s prostateglandandcancer,aidedbythedaVinci robotic-assistedsurgicalsystem.
