Bowresidentsareusingtheirbaseballand softballbatstoraisethousandsofdollarsfor cancerpatients. The‘HittingCanceroutofthePark’Homerun Derbystartedin2016tohonorMegan Rheinhardt,theleaguecommissioneranda breastcancerandlymphomasurvivor.With MeganandfriendWendyGazawaybehindit, theefforthasgrownandbecomeanannual event–attractingsluggersfromthetown’s baseballandsoftballleaguesandthe entirecommunity. “Now,it’snotfocusedonMeganthecancer survivor,”saidMegan,aConcordHospital employee.“ItwasjustthepushthatIthink wasneededtobringacommunitytogether thatalwayssupportedoneanother.” TheeffortbeganwithWendyandDavid Gazaway,whoownAlliedInsuranceAgency, pledging$20foreveryhomerunhitduring the2016seasonbyBowyouthbaseballand softballplayers.Theplayershit50homeruns. Then,coachesandotherresidentswanted aturn,sotheHomerunDerbystarted,with sluggerspayingtogotobatforcancer survivors.Theyraisedmorethan$3,000in asinglenight. In2018,theprogramincludedonlythe one-dayHomerunDerby,with75-80batters indivisionsfor10yearsoldandunder,middle school,womenandhighschool/adult.Over threeyears,thecommunityeffort,including businessdonationsandotherdonationsat theevent,hasraisedcloseto$12,000,all forConcordHospitalTrust’sLendMeaHand Fund,whichhelpscancerpatientsinneed without-of-pocketexpensessuchasgas andgroceries. MeganandWendychosethefundbecause itusessmallerdonationstomakeabig differenceforcancerpatients. “Weunderstandthereisthemedicalaspectof cancertreatment,buttherealsoistheimpact tofamilyandnormalcyoflifeandwewanted totakesomeofthatburdenofffamiliesas muchaspossible,”Wendysaid.“TheLend MeaHandFundfitsthattoaT,providinggas cardsorgroceriesorhelpingwithchildcare. Anystressyoucanhelprelieveassomeoneis goingthroughcancerishuge,sothat’swhere wewantedtofocus.” Thisyear,thecommunity’soutpouringof supportembracedthefamilyofBowresident Kristen Evans,whodiedofcancer.And,atthis year’sHomerunDerby,Kristen’shusband,Joe, pledged$5foreachhomerun.Participantshit morethan200.Meganisgratefulherfriends andcommunityhavebeenabletoturna negativesituationintoapositiveprogram. She’salsoproudthatherhusbandandson havebeenamongtheleadingbatters.Her husband,Brent,wonlastyearandson,Myles, wonthisyear. “Hecameuptomeafterwardandsaid‘Mom, Ididthisforyou.’” TheLendMeaHandFund isaConcordHospitalTrustcharitablefundthatsupports specialanduniqueneedsofPaysonCenterforCancerCare patients.MoniesfromtheFundareusedtosupportout- of-pocketexpensesforcancerpatientsinneedincluding transportationcosts,prescriptionandgroceryexpensesand otheritemsthatenhanceapatient’squalityoflife.
