Excellent Care Close to Home

Terry Thomason of Meredith feels like he has the best of both worlds—excellent care with the latest technology at Concord Hospital Center for Cardiac Care, and the peace of mind of having the same experts in his own neighborhood.

“That has been precisely my experience, a combination of convenience and a high level of competence,” Terry said.

Terry, 86, a retired minister and investment manager, has atrial fibrillation, AFib, an abnormal heartbeat that increases his risk of having a stroke. His primary care physician referred him to Concord Hospital Cardiac Associates, a CHMG practice with offices in Concord and in Laconia, 15 minutes from Terry’s home.

At the Hospital, Dr. Adam Chodosh implanted a WATCHMAN™ device in Terry’s heart. The tiny wire and mesh device helps reduce stroke risk by blocking blood from entering the area of the heart where it can pool and cause clots in AFib patients.

At Cardiac Associates in Laconia, Terry sees Dr. Chodosh and Dr. Ayesha Nazeer for follow-up and routine cardiac care.

“That’s been one of the strong attributes of Concord Hospital cardiac care,” Terry said of the collaboration that brings cardiac experts to his area. “And it’s outstanding support for my decision to choose Concord Hospital.”

Cryoballoon Ablation

Cardiac ablation is a delicate technique in which electrophysiologists thread catheters into the heart and apply heat or cold to scar and destroy tiny areas that trigger a patient’s abnormal heart rhythm. Radiofrequency ablation burns the target tissue. Cryoablation freezes it.

Concord Hospital Center for Cardiac Care is one of only two facilities in New Hampshire performing a newer technique called cryoballoon ablation.

The technique is an improvement over cryoablation, in which specialists freeze single, precise points of tissue in the heart, one at a time. Frequently, that means they must freeze multiple points to destroy the tissue causing abnormal heart rhythm.

The cryoballoon ablation technique permits doctors to effectively treat multiple points with one freezing application. A tiny balloon is inflated in the heart to come in contact with the target area and the freezing material is fed into the balloon, freezing the larger area, reducing the procedure time and eliminating the need to freeze multiple individual target areas.

New Minimally Invasive Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Procedure

Cardiac patients who are too ill to undergo traditional heart surgery are now benefiting from a life-saving technique at Concord Hospital where specialists insert a tiny pump in the heart to maintain blood flow while they open blocked arteries or perform other procedures.

The Impella® device essentially takes over the heart’s pumping function to ensure circulation continues if a patient’s heart slows or is not functioning properly. It allows doctors at Concord Hospital Center for Cardiac Care to treat high-risk patients who have no other treatment options.

The Impella®, whose maker calls it the world’s smallest heart pump, is advanced to the heart in a catheter that is inserted in an artery in the leg. The pump is used during procedures called protected or high-risk PCI that open blockages in arteries.

Patients benefit from a less invasive approach resulting in a much shorter recovery time, fewer medications and less chance of complications associated with major surgery.
