Tick Bite Prevention: Protect Yourself

If You Are Bit By a Tick

  • Remove a tick as soon as possible if you find one attached to your skin
  • Dispose of the tick
  • Clean the tick bite site with soap and warm water or hand sanitizer
  • Check yourself for other ticks

Treatment

High-risk tick bites can be treated with a single dose of medication to prevent Lyme disease, especially in children.

When to Seek Treatment

If you develop a rash that gets bigger, flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, muscle, and joint pain, fatigue, or headache), infection at the bite site (redness, pain, drainage), or you think a deer tick bit you, you need to seek medical attention.
