Barium Enema examination provides an evaluation of the lower portion of the digestive system. UGI Series examination provides an evaluation of the upper portion of the
digestive system.
What to Expect During the Exam
A technologist explains the procedure to you and ask you several questions about your medical history.
- Barium Enema - You are asked to lie on the x-ray table. A lubricated enema tip is inserted into your rectum and barium is slowly
released into your lower intestinal system allowing the Radiologist to visualize your intestinal tract. By relaxing, taking deep breaths,
and following directions, you can contribute to the success of the examination. During the procedure, you are asked to shift your position
and hold your breath while images are being taken.
- UGI Series - You are asked to stand and/or lie down during the procedure. The radiologist gives you a liquid barium drink while he
views your digestive system on the fluoroscope. After the fluoroscope is complete, the radiographer takes some additional x-rays to
complete the exam.
Preparation
Your physician provides you with detailed instructions describing how to prepare for your procedure. If you take any medications, ask your doctor if you should take
them before your exam. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding garments that have zippers, belts or buttons made of metal. Note: Women should always inform their physician
or technologist if there is a possibility they are pregnant or breast-feeding.
After the Exam
The barium mixture may color your stool slightly whitish for the next day or two, and may cause constipation if not passed completely. We recommend you drink plenty of
water and/or fruit juices. You are able to resume your regular diet immediately following the exam, unless your doctor tells you
otherwise. You may use a laxative afterwards as indicated by your doctor. A radiologist, a physician specially trained to diagnose
conditions and diseases, interprets the results of the exam. The radiologist sends an interpretation of your results to your primary care
physician. Your doctor discusses these results with you and explains what they mean in relation to your health.
