Cardiac peer mentors support healing
Cardiac peer mentor talks with a heart surgery patient.
Cardiac Peer Mentors at Concord Hospital provide peer support to prospective cardiac patients. Volunteers, who are former Concord Hospital cardiac patients, spend time speaking with current patients in their Hospital rooms before surgery or making follow-up visits or phone calls after patients have been discharged home. Since Peer Mentors have already had surgery, they can share how they coped with anxieties and fears, and made healthy lifestyle adjustments.
Many patients, although satisfied with the quality care they received from the cardiac surgery team, wish they had the opportunity to speak with someone who had also been through cardiac surgery. Peer Mentors believe strongly in the role peer support can play in recovery, emotional well-being, and making the transition to home after surgery.
To speak with a Peer Mentor at Concord Hospital or after you are discharged, call Addie Camelio, a social worker for cardiac services who coordinates the program, at (603) 227-7000, ext. 3135.
