The NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency was established in 1994. It is an 8-8-8 program that provides residents with a hands-on approach to learning, under the guidance of
experienced faculty members. Our multidisciplinary faculty includes 13 family practitioners (seven of whom provide obstetrical care), five pediatricians, three
obstetricians/gynecologists, one internist, one psychotherapists and four social workers. Two faculty members hold certificates of added qualification, in geriatrics and
sports medicine, and four have a master's degree in public health.
Residents work with faculty and community preceptors, as well as social workers, care managers, home care nurses, and psychotherapists to provide community responsive
health care to the underserved through Concord Hospital Family Health Center and its satellite, Hillsboro-Deering Family Health. The Family Health Center, located in the
Yeaple building adjacent to Concord Hospital, provides a comprehensive practice site for training family physicians. It has 26 examination rooms, two procedure rooms,
counseling rooms, business offices, conference rooms, precepting and clinical workspaces, as well as a group visit room. Hillsboro-Deering Family Health, located in a rural
setting 20 miles west of Concord, provides the same services on a smaller scale. Six residents and three faculty members practice at the facility, which includes six
examination rooms, one procedure room, a library, and a counseling room.
While in the Hospital, residents manage the inpatient adult medicine and maternal child health services with direct supervision and support from NHDFMR faculty and ongoing
guidance and teaching from the Hospital nursing and medical staffs. Throughout their three years, residents spend approximately half that time on inpatient floors and half
in outpatient settings. Our clinical curriculum is based on four to six week blocks and focuses on evidence-based diagnosis and treatment, procedural skills and care
management skills, critical to effective patient care.
The Concord Hospital Family Health Center uses an electronic medical record system for practice-based learning, population care and evidence-based medicine. A focus of our
program is the development of this technology as a tool for clinical improvement and addressing community needs.
