We believe that leadership, innovation and the skills of quality improvement will be critical to the practice of family medicine in the coming
decades. For this reason, we have instituted an advanced training option that emphasizes community and practice leadership focused on improving care
to underserved and vulnerable populations. This program is a combined family medicine/leadership preventive medicine residency that creatively
integrates our community assets with academic resources available through The Dartmouth Institute (TDI) at Dartmouth Medical School.
Upon entering the combined program, residents will join the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Leadership
Preventive Medicine Residency for a five-year integrated curriculum that includes the components necessary for board certification in family
medicine and preventive medicine. Class work for a Master of Public Health (MPH) will be completed. Additionally, ongoing participation in training
seminars designed to develop expertise in systems change and leadership will occur.
Family medicine training and the preventive medicine practicum experience take place at our unopposed 8-8-8 residency located in Concord. The
residency’s community health center focuses on care of underserved and vulnerable populations through innovative delivery models and serves as the
learning laboratory for quality improvement work. Seminars and course work for the MPH take place at TDI.
An additional training pathway, called the Paul Ambrose Fellowship, is also available for highly committed individuals. In this pathway, students
apply and interview in their third year of medical school and begin the MPH coursework in their fourth year. They complete the integrated program in
4.5 years of residency training time.
