Osteopathic Curriculum Print Page

NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency supports a curriculum that incorporates osteopathic tenets and principles. Osteopathic concepts are those that promote treating the patient as a whole and understanding the effect of structure on function. Included in this concept is the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of the individual. This is well integrated into the teaching of family medicine and should be promoted in all aspects of primary care. The curriculum is designed for osteopathic residents who are interested in furthering their manipulative skills and allopathic residents interested in expanding their diagnostic and treatment toolbox. Philosophical knowledge is built upon while as a resident you will evaluate and treat patients with a variety of complaints from an osteopathic perspective.

NHDFMR is committed to helping osteopathic residents continue to build on their skills learned in medical school. Both osteopathic attending physicians, as well as allopathic attending physicians with advanced training in osteopathic manipulation supervise, evaluate and mentor residents in day-to-day patient care. There are opportunities to use skills both during inpatient rounds, as well as during ambulatory care. Each resident, if interested, will have a personally supervised OMT clinic monthly. Quarterly lectures will focus on techniques, patient populations and specific medical complaints. Additionally, as an osteopathic resident you will have the opportunity to attend state, regional and national hands on courses to further your skills.

While NHDFMR is not an AOA-approved residency, osteopathic residents can apply for approval of the ACGME training as an AOA-approved internship. This is done via paper application following the PG-1 year. The AOA requirements differ slightly from the ACGME requirements. We support residents who choose to seek this accreditation by making the necessary curricular changes and paying for AOA membership. Please contact us directly to learn more about this process.
