NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency supports a curriculum that incorporates osteopathic tenets and principles. Osteopathic concepts are those that promote treating the patient as a whole and understanding the effect of structure on function. Included in this concept are the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of the patient, which are well integrated into the teaching of family medicine and should be promoted in all aspects of primary care. The curriculum is designed for osteopathic residents interested in furthering their manipulative skills and allopathic residents interested in expanding their diagnostic and treatment toolbox. The curriculum will increase residents' funds of philsophical knowledge, as well as encourage residents to use an osteopathic perspective when evaluating and treating patients.
NHDFMR is committed to helping osteopathic residents continue to build on skills learned in medical school. Both osteopathic attending physicians, as well as allopathic attending physicians with advanced training in osteopathic manipulation supervise, evaluate and mentor residents in day-to-day patient care. There are opportunities to use skills both during inpatient rounds, as well as during ambulatory care. Each resident, if interested, will have a personally supervised OMT clinic monthly. Quarterly lectures will focus on techniques, patient populations and specific medical complaints. Additionally, as an osteopathic resident you will have the opportunity to attend state, regional and national hands-on-courses to further your skills. The residency supplies an osteopathic handbook and pays for membership to the American Osteopathic Association.
